Kil-Kare Win Makes 295 For Vallo
by Jerry Wahl
Xenia, OH. (4/25) - It was fan appreciation night at Kil-Kare Speedway Friday night as a near full grandstand took advantage of the five dollars general admission to witness the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series events and they were entertained with another night of exciting events. Opening nights feature winner Tim Allensworth and Justin Alsip started on the front row in the thirty lap feature which offered double points while former track champs John Vallo and Sam Heckman made up the second row. At the drop of the green It was the Allensworth/Vallo show just like opening night except Alsip made it a threesome for the front spot. The trio ran bumper to bumper lap after lap with Alsip on occassion moving up on the inside of Vallo while Vallo made several attemps on the outside of Allensworth. A lap twenty-two spin by Joe Hill brought the only caution flag out and with action back underway the three kept the fans on the edge of their seats as they came up on slower traffic. Allensworth looked like he just might be able to hold off the determined Vallo when suddenly he dropped off the pace with mechanical problems to become an infield spectator while Vallo in his Gary Estes owned Bond Machine/Weiler sponsored car sccored the win, his career 295th as he has his goal on 300 wins. Alsip was a close second while Sam Hckman had to hold off the pressure of Ricky Bates to claim third with Bates fourth and Bobby Justus fifth. Veteran late model driver John Vallo, the "Fairborn Flash" lit up the crowd in the first heat as he came from the tail to just barely beat early leader Bobby Justus by .004 seconds. Justin Alsip was right in there in third and fourth was Ricky Bates. The second heat was a great one also with four cars running right up front. Young Shawn Stansell maintained the lead all the way but the pressure was on him all the way. Eddie Simpson held down second until the finish line when Joe Hill slipped by him with Simpson third and Virgil Powell fourth. Second generation driver Chad Poole of Springfield plans on being a regular competitor at Kil-Kare this season and Friday night he showed he is out to win as he claimed the thirty lap modified feature. Poole started on the pole with Bill Burba alongside with Poole putting his Paul Storer owned Storco Construction special out front at the start. Poole set a rapid pace with Burba running second but seasoned veteran Dick Dunlevy Jr. who had set a new track record of 13.743 in time trials was on the move as he put the pressure on Burba, displacing his on lap nine to hold down second. Dunlevy then went after leader Poole as he tried several times to pull alongside but failed, settling for second place at the checker. Burba was third as Jason Mahaffey slipped by Josh Smith to claim fourth and fifth was Smith. Jason Mahaffey picked up his first modified heat win of the year in his Affordable Auto Parts open-wheeler, keeping the lead all the way but behind him Josh Smith had his hands full holding off the challenges of Chad Poole. Poole finally succeeded on the last lap to take second place with Smith third while Dick Dunlevy was fourth. Lady driver Jamie Brenneman in the Muffler Brother of Xenia special jumped out front in the second heat and was leading until contact was made by second place running Caleb Rescher resulting with her spinning on turn two. Rescher was sent to the tail and Brenneman resumed the lead on the restart with Joe Jennings in second. Brenneman showed she meant business as she picked up her first heat win with Jennings second, Rescher third and Dewayne Snyder Jr. fourth. Xenia's Tom Williams is off to a great start this season in the sport stocks as in time trials he set a new track record of 14.883 and then came back to record his seond straight feature win. Mike South Jr. led the first lap of the twenty lap feature but on the net lap it was Williams out front in his Muffler Brothers of Xenia car. Williams maintained the win the rest of the way as South had to hold off the challenges of former track record holder Justin Miller. Miller had to settle for third with Mel McMullen fourth and Travis Diggs fifth. Nineteen front-wheel drive compacts faced starter Mike Stapleton's green flag with last weeks winner Aaron Harshbarger on the pole along with defending track champ Tim Haerr alongside. When the green flag fell on the twenty lap feature it was a mass mayham as the drivers battled for positions. Harshbarger led all the way but it certainly was not an easy win at all as Haerr in his Mahaffey Auto Salvage car battled nip and tuck all the way on dogging the rear bumper of Harshbarger, even trying to pass him on the last lap but had to settle for second. Bo Hoelscher and Chris Boggs fought for third with Boggs taking the spot with Boggs fourth and Paul Holley fourth. The first compact heat got off with Jess Drook and Paul Holley leading the field to the green only to see the caution fly when Troy Patterson got tangled on the frontstretch and was out of action in his Jims Body Shop car. Second generation driver Jess Drook jumped out front on the restart and held it all the way in the Drook Service special as he barely held off second place finisher Aaron Harshbarger. Holley was third and Bo Hoelscher fourth. Just like the first heat the second one saw the yellow wave on the first lap when Chuck Adkins spun on turn two. When the green waved again it was like turning a heard of elephants loose as the drivers took off like gangbusters running four wide through turn one and two. Rodney Terry enjoyed the lead momentarily but a hard charging Chuck Adkins took over but here came last weeks heat winner Joe Hoelscher to steal the lead and the win. Steve Salyers slipped by for second with Adkins third and Ron Sagers fourth. A full racing card resumes next Friday night with the gates opening at 6 p.m. and racing at 8 p.m.
